Expression Web Reports, View a Web Site Summary

Tina Clarke

Web site reports contain information about your Expression Web website and can provide detailed records about its related pages, elements, and links. Expression Web compiles these reports as you create your site to help you analyse the performance of your web site.

Before you run this report, you should go to Site - Recalculate Hyperlinks. (EW 4.0 Tools - Recalculate Hyperlinks)

When you first visit the 'Report View', depending on the size of your web, it may take a couple of minutes for it to load.  This is because Expression Web builds a fresh database each time it is opened. So, it is a good idea, therefore, not to close a web while in 'Report View' or, the next time you open your site, you will have to wait for the database to generate before you can start editing.

File Reports

All Files
Every file in your website, which is useful when you're looking for a file but can't remember which folder you saved it in. You can tell at a glance if you have not changed the <title> tag.

Recently Added Files
Files that were added to your website in the past 30 days.

Recently Changed Files
Files that were changed within the past 30 days.

Older Files
Files that haven't been changed in the past 72 days. You can change the number of days that defines "older".

TIP: Various report properties can be modified under Tools | Applications Options | Reports View.  You can enter your own amounts in the Options dialog box. I would recommend setting the 'Slow Pages' to 30 seconds with a 'Connection speed' of 28.8k modem, as this setting ensures even the slowest of connections is catered to. This is the slowest setting allowed.

To see a more detailed Site Summary report, click on one of the blue underlined links under the 'Name' column.  There are 15 reports in the site summary with 13 reports detailing further information, the most important being 'Broken Hyperlinks'.

Shared Content reports

Dynamic Web Templates
Pages attached to a Dynamic Web Template, as well as the Dynamic Web Templates.

Master Pages
Pages using ASP.NET master pages.

Style Sheet Links

Problems reports

Maintenance Problems reports display problems with your web site, including broken links, unlinked files, and files that take too long to download, (and will download slowly as a result) and so on. The most important of these is the 'Broken Hyperlinks' Report as it goes a long way to maintaining a healthy site.

Unlinked Files
Files that have no hyperlinks to them from any of your pages.

Slow Pages
Pages that take longer than 30 seconds to download at a connection speed of 28.8 Kbps. You can change the number of seconds and connection speed that defines "slow".

Broken Hyperlinks
Pages that contain broken hyperlinks to either internal website pages or links to other websites.

Customize views in reports

To sort reports by a specific column, click the column heading.

To move columns around, click and hold the column heading, and then drag it to where you want.

To change the width of a column, place the cursor between the column headings until the cursor changes to a double arrow, then click and drag the column to the width you want.

Show or hide gridlines in reports, on the ‘Tools’ menu, click ‘Application Options’, and then click the ‘Reports View’ tab. Select or clear the ‘Display gridlines when viewing reports’ check box.

Use AutoFilter with Web Site Reports

AutoFilter is the way you view a subset of data in Reports view. A filtered list displays only the report data that meets the criteria you specify for a column. It is available for all reports except the ‘Site Summary’ report.

On the Site menu, point to 'Reports', and then select the report you want to run.

Do one or more of the following:

Filter a list by choosing an item from the drop-down list

Click the arrow in the column that contains the item you want, and select it.

NOTE: You can use multiple filters in one report by choosing values in different columns. For example, you can choose htm in the Type column, and 5KB in the size column to show all HTML files of 5KB.

Filter a list for rows that contain customized information

This procedure enables you to filter a list for the following customized information:

Rows that contain specific text Items greater than or less than another item Items containing or not containing specific data (The beginning or end of a text string)

Click the arrow in the column that contains the text, and click (Custom). In the box on the left, click equals, or does not equal, contains, or does not contain, begins with, or does not begin with, and so on. In the box on the right, enter the text you want. To add another criteria, click And or Or, and repeat the previous step.

Filter for blank or nonblank cells

Click the arrow in the column that contains the data then click (Blanks) or (NonBlanks).

NOTE: The (Blanks) and (NonBlanks) options are available only if the column you want to filter contains a blank cell

Remove filters

To clear filters from a single column, click the arrow in the column that contains the filter you want to remove, and click (All). To clear filters for the entire report, right-click anywhere on the report, and click 'Remove Filters' on the shortcut menu.

NOTE: The filter settings are saved when you close the Web site, or when you close Expression Web.

Troubleshoot reports

Why are some images or other files in my web site not represented in my web site reports?

The Site Summary report displays the size, in kilobytes, of all the files in your web site. If your web site contains files located in hidden folders, those files will not be included in this report. To include files in hidden folders in your reports:

On the Site menu, click Site Settings, then click the Advanced tab. Select the Show hidden files and folders check box.

View Screenshot - EW 1.0 & EW 2.0

With Expression Web 3.0 & 4.0 hidden files are always un-ticked unless you tick the box marked 'Hide files and folders that begin with an underscore character (_)'
